Key Verse

“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”

Psalm 40:3 (KJV)

The Story

David wrote many psalms in hard times. In this one, he looks back on a time when he felt like he was stuck at the bottom of a pit.

“I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.”

In those days, a pit was often an old cistern, a deep hole cut into rock to hold rainwater. When it was dry, the bottom was thick mud. Prisoners were sometimes thrown into them. Once you were in, you couldn’t climb out.

David says God “brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”

God pulled him out of the mud and put his feet on solid ground.

And then He did one more thing. “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.”

David couldn’t keep quiet about it. “Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” He told everyone. “I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart.”

Reflection

Notice the order of this psalm. First David waited. Then God heard. Then God lifted him out, set him on a rock, and gave him a new song.
