Consider the Lilies
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Matthew 6:19–34 ↗
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)The Story
Jesus sat on a hillside in Galilee and taught a crowd of ordinary people. Many of them were poor. They lived day to day, worried about where the next meal would come from and whether they would have clothes to wear.
Jesus said, “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.” Don’t worry about these things.
Then He pointed to the birds flying overhead. “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”
He pointed to the wildflowers covering the hillside. “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
If God dresses the grass that’s here today and burned tomorrow, won’t He take much better care of you?
“For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Reflection
Jesus doesn’t say our needs don’t matter. He says the opposite: your Father knows you need them. He doesn’t say we shouldn’t work. Birds work hard. He says we shouldn’t worry.
