Key Verse

“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”

John 4:29 (KJV)

The Story

Jesus and His disciples were traveling through Samaria, a region most Jews avoided. Around noon, Jesus sat down by a well, tired from the journey, while His disciples went into town to buy food.

A woman came to draw water. Noon was the hottest part of the day, not when most women came to the well. She may have been avoiding the others.

Jesus asked her, “Give me to drink.” She was stunned. Jews didn’t speak to Samaritans, and men didn’t usually speak to women they didn’t know in public. “How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me?”

Jesus told her that if she knew who was asking, she would have asked Him for “living water,” water that would become a spring of life inside her so she would never thirst again.

“Sir, give me this water,” she said.

“Go, call thy husband.” “I have no husband,” she answered. Jesus said, “Thou hast well said… For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband.”

He knew everything about her. And He was still talking to her.

She left her water jar and ran back into town, to the very people she had been avoiding. “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” Many came out to meet Jesus, and many believed.

Reflection

This woman came to the well alone, carrying a past that probably followed her everywhere. Jesus knew every detail of it, and instead of turning away, He offered her living water.
