Key Verse

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”

Isaiah 6:8 (KJV)

The Story

In the year that King Uzziah died, the nation was shaken. Uzziah had reigned for fifty-two years. Now he was gone.

That same year, the prophet Isaiah had a vision. He saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

Above Him stood seraphim, heavenly beings with six wings each. They called out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”

The doorposts shook at the sound, and the house filled with smoke.

Isaiah was undone. “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips… for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to him holding a live coal, taken with tongs from the altar. He touched Isaiah’s mouth with it and said, “Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.”

Then Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord. “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”

And Isaiah answered, “Here am I; send me.”

Reflection

Notice the order of this story. First Isaiah saw God. Then he saw himself clearly. Then he was cleansed. And only then did he hear the call.
