Hold Not Thy Peace
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Acts 18:1–11 ↗
“Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.”
Acts 18:9–10 (KJV)The Story
When Paul arrived in Corinth, he was worn out. He had been beaten and jailed in Philippi, chased out of Thessalonica and Berea, and mocked in Athens. He later wrote to the Corinthians that he came to them “in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.”
In Corinth, he found work making tents with a couple named Aquila and Priscilla. Every Sabbath, he reasoned in the synagogue.
Once again, the opposition came. When people resisted and spoke against him, Paul shook out his clothes and said, “Your blood be upon your own heads… from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.” He moved next door, to the house of a man named Justus. Even the ruler of the synagogue, Crispus, believed in the Lord, along with his whole household.
Then one night, the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision. “Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.”
So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and six months, teaching the Word of God.
Reflection
We tend to think the apostle Paul was fearless. But God said to him, “Be not afraid.” Why say that unless Paul was afraid?
