If Any Man Hear My Voice

Key Verse

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

Revelation 3:20 (KJV)

The Story

Near the end of the first century, the risen Jesus gave the apostle John messages for seven churches. The last one was to the church in Laodicea.

Laodicea was a wealthy city. It was known for its banks, its fine wool, and an eye salve made there. The church there had grown comfortable.

Jesus’ words to them were blunt. “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot.” They were lukewarm.

They said, “I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing.” But Jesus said they didn’t realize they were “wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”

Then His tone changed. “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.” His correction came from love.

And then came one of the most tender invitations in the Bible: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

Reflection

These words were written to a church. Jesus was standing outside the door of people who already called themselves His followers, and He was knocking.
