Is the Lord’s Hand Waxed Short?
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Numbers 11:4–23, 31–32 ↗
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD’s hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.”
Numbers 11:23 (KJV)The Story
God had fed Israel with manna every morning in the wilderness. But the people grew tired of it. They started remembering Egypt. “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick.” Now all we have is this manna.
They forgot that in Egypt they had been slaves.
The whole camp started weeping at their tent doors. Moses was worn out. He told God, I can’t carry all these people by myself.
God answered that He would give them meat, not for one day, but for a whole month.
Moses couldn’t imagine it. There are six hundred thousand men here, he said. Even if we killed every animal in our herds or caught every fish in the sea, would it be enough?
God answered with a question: “Is the LORD’s hand waxed short?” You’ll see whether My word comes true.
Then a wind went out from the Lord and swept in quail from the sea. They covered the ground around the camp for miles in every direction, about three feet deep. The people gathered them for two days and a night.
Reflection
Moses was a man of great faith, but even he did the math and came up short. He looked at the size of the need and the size of his resources and couldn’t see how it could work.
