It Is Written
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Matthew 4:1–11 ↗
“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
Matthew 4:10 (KJV)The Story
Right after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterward He was hungry.
That’s when the tempter came. “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”
Jesus answered with Scripture. “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Then the devil took Him up to the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem. Throw Yourself down, he said, and he quoted Scripture too: God will send His angels to catch You.
Jesus answered again. “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
Finally, the devil took Him up a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.”
“Get thee hence, Satan,” Jesus said, “for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.
Reflection
Jesus was hungry, alone, and physically weak after forty days without food. The enemy chose that moment to attack. And Jesus fought back with one weapon: the Word of God.
