Let There Be Light
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Genesis 1:1–5, 26–31 ↗
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
Genesis 1:3 (KJV)The Story
Before anything else existed, there was God.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
No shape. No order. No light. Only darkness and deep water. But the Bible adds one more detail: “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” God was already there, hovering over the chaos.
Then God spoke. “Let there be light: and there was light.”
And God saw the light, “that it was good.” He separated the light from the darkness. He called the light Day and the darkness Night. “And the evening and the morning were the first day.”
Over the next days, God kept speaking. Sky and sea. Land and plants. Sun, moon, and stars. Fish and birds and animals. And finally, people, made in His own image.
On the sixth day, God looked at everything He had made, “and, behold, it was very good.”
Reflection
The very first thing God ever did in the Bible was make something new out of darkness and chaos. That’s who He is.
