Never Forsaken
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Psalm 37:1–26 ↗
“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”
Psalm 37:25 (KJV)The Story
Near the end of his life, King David sat down to write some advice. He had seen a lot. He had been a shepherd, a soldier, a fugitive, and a king. He had been rich and he had been hunted. He had watched evil men succeed and good men suffer.
And so he wrote a psalm for people who are tempted to worry and envy.
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers.” Don’t be jealous of people who cheat and seem to get away with it. They will wither like grass.
Instead, “Trust in the LORD, and do good.” “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
Then David looked back over his whole long life and made a simple observation. “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”
Reflection
This isn’t a promise that good people will never go hungry. David himself went without food when he was running from Saul. Godly people in every age have known poverty.
