Peace, Be Still
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Mark 4:35–41 ↗
“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Mark 4:39 (KJV)The Story
At the end of a long day of teaching, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us pass over unto the other side.” So they set out across the Sea of Galilee in a boat.
A great storm of wind arose. Waves crashed over the sides, and the boat began filling with water. Several of these men were experienced fishermen. They knew this lake. And they were terrified.
And Jesus? He was in the back of the boat, asleep on a pillow.
They woke Him up. “Master, carest thou not that we perish?”
Jesus got up. He spoke to the wind and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.”
The wind stopped. And there was a great calm.
Then He turned to His disciples. “Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”
The men were filled with awe. They said to one another, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Reflection
Notice what Jesus said before they ever got in the boat: “Let us pass over unto the other side.” He didn’t say, let’s go halfway and drown. His word already contained the promise. The storm didn’t change it.
