The Fourth Man in the Fire

🎧 Listen to this story 1:27

Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Daniel 3 ↗

Key Verse

“Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

Daniel 3:25 (KJV)

The Story

King Nebuchadnezzar built a golden statue ninety feet tall and gave a simple order: when the music plays, everyone bows. Anyone who refuses is thrown into a blazing furnace.

The music played, and the whole crowd went down, except three young Hebrew men: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Brought before the furious king, they didn’t argue or beg. They told him their God was able to rescue them, and even if He didn’t, they still would not bow.

The king had the furnace heated seven times hotter. It was so hot that the soldiers who threw the men in were killed by the flames. Then Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet. He had thrown three bound men into the fire, but he saw four men walking around, unbound and unharmed.

When the three came out, not a hair was singed. They didn’t even smell of smoke.

Reflection

Notice what God did not do. He didn’t stop the king’s order, cool the furnace, or keep them from being thrown in. He met them inside the fire.
