The Potter’s House
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Jeremiah 18:1–6 ↗
“O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”
Jeremiah 18:6 (KJV)The Story
One day, the Lord gave Jeremiah an unusual instruction. “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.”
So Jeremiah went. He found the potter working at his wheel, shaping a vessel out of clay.
As Jeremiah watched, the vessel was marred in the potter’s hands. Something went wrong. The clay didn’t take the shape it should have.
But the potter didn’t throw the clay away. He pressed it back down and made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to him.
Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. “O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand.”
Reflection
God could have simply told Jeremiah the message. Instead, He sent him to watch. Sometimes God speaks through what we see around us, through everyday pictures that make His truth clear.
