This Is My Beloved Son
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Matthew 3:13–17 ↗
“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Matthew 3:17 (KJV)The Story
John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness and baptizing people in the Jordan River, calling them to repent. Crowds came from everywhere.
One day, Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by John.
John tried to stop Him. “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?” John knew Jesus had no sin to repent of.
Jesus answered, “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.” So John agreed.
When Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him.
And a voice came from heaven: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Reflection
At this point, Jesus hadn’t preached a sermon. He hadn’t performed a single miracle. He hadn’t healed anyone or fed any crowds.
