Thy Son Liveth
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: John 4:46–54 ↗
“Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.”
John 4:50 (KJV)The Story
In the town of Capernaum, a royal official had a son who was sick and dying. When he heard that Jesus had come back to Galilee, he traveled about twenty miles to Cana to find Him.
He begged Jesus to come down and heal his son before the boy died.
Jesus answered, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.”
The father didn’t argue. He just asked again. “Sir, come down ere my child die.”
Jesus didn’t go with him. Instead, He gave him a promise. “Go thy way; thy son liveth.”
And the man believed the word Jesus spoke, and he went his way.
That was the whole test. He had to walk home with nothing but a promise. No sign. No Jesus walking beside him. Just words.
The next day, as he was traveling home, his servants met him on the road. Your son is alive, they said.
He asked them when the boy began to get better. Yesterday at the seventh hour, they told him, the fever left him.
The father realized that was the exact hour Jesus had said, “Thy son liveth.” And he and his whole household believed.
Reflection
This father wanted Jesus to come with him. Jesus gave him something harder: a promise to take home by faith.
