When the Wine Ran Out
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: John 2:1–11 ↗
“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
John 2:5 (KJV)The Story
Jesus, His mother, and His disciples were invited to a wedding in the village of Cana. In that culture, a wedding feast could last for days, and running out of food or wine would be a deep embarrassment to the bride and groom and their families. It was something people would talk about for years.
And in the middle of the celebration, the wine ran out.
Mary noticed. She went to Jesus and simply told Him, “They have no wine.” Then she turned to the servants and said, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
Nearby stood six large stone water jars, the kind used for ceremonial washing. Each one held about twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water.” They filled them to the brim.
“Draw out now,” He said, “and bear unto the governor of the feast.”
The man in charge of the feast tasted it and had no idea where it came from. He called the groom over, amazed. “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine… but thou hast kept the good wine until now.”
It was the first miracle Jesus performed, and the Bible says His disciples believed in Him.
Reflection
Jesus’ first miracle wasn’t healing a disease or defeating an enemy. It was saving a young couple from embarrassment. He cares about our celebrations, our families, and the moments that matter to us, not only our crises.
