Key Verse

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

The Story

Moses had once been a prince of Egypt. But after killing an Egyptian and fleeing for his life, he spent forty years in the desert of Midian tending his father-in-law’s sheep. By now he was eighty years old. Whatever dreams he once had were long gone.

One day, leading the flock to the far side of the wilderness near Mount Horeb, Moses noticed something odd: a bush on fire that wasn’t burning up. He turned aside to look. From the middle of the flames, God called his name. “Moses, Moses.” “Here am I,” he answered.

“Take off your sandals,” God said, “for the place where you’re standing is holy ground.” Then God told him He had seen His people’s suffering in Egypt and heard their cries. And He was sending Moses to bring them out.

Moses’ first response was “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh?” God didn’t answer by building up Moses’ confidence. He said, “Certainly I will be with thee.” And when Moses asked what name to give the people, God said, “I AM THAT I AM.”

Reflection

Moses asked the wrong question. “Who am I?” focuses on our own ability, our past, our failures. God redirected him to the right question: Who is God?
