Wings as Eagles
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Isaiah 40:1–11, 27–31 ↗
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)The Story
God’s people were discouraged. Isaiah spoke to a nation that would one day be carried into exile, far from home, wondering if God had forgotten them.
The chapter opens with tender words. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.”
But the people complained. “My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God.” God doesn’t see what I’m going through. He doesn’t care.
Isaiah answered with a question. “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?”
God never gets tired. And He shares His strength. “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”
Even young people get tired, Isaiah said. Even strong young men stumble and fall.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Reflection
To “wait upon the LORD” isn’t passive. It means to hope in Him, to trust Him, to keep looking to Him while you wait for Him to act.
