Key Verse

“But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.”

Judges 15:19 (KJV)

The Story

Samson was the strongest man who ever lived. The Philistines ruled over Israel, and they wanted him captured. So the men of Judah, his own people, tied him up with two new ropes and handed him over.

When the Philistines saw him, they shouted in triumph. Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Samson. The ropes on his arms snapped like burnt flax. He grabbed the jawbone of a donkey lying on the ground and fought the whole Philistine force by himself. A thousand men fell that day.

Samson made up a little victory song about it.

And then, as the adrenaline wore off, he realized he was dying of thirst. Alone in that dry place, he called out to God. “Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst?”

God answered. He split open a hollow place in the ground at Lehi, and water came pouring out. Samson drank, “his spirit came again, and he revived.” He named the place En-hakkore, “the spring of the one who called.”

Reflection

Samson had just won the greatest victory of his life. And minutes later he was too weak to stand.
