Armor That Doesn’t Fit

Key Verse

“And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.”

1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV)

The Story

For forty days, the giant Goliath had stepped out from the Philistine lines and challenged Israel to send one man to fight him. Every soldier was terrified. Then a shepherd boy named David arrived with food for his brothers, heard the giant’s taunts, and volunteered.

King Saul was doubtful, but he agreed, and then did what made sense to him. He dressed David in his own armor: a bronze helmet, a heavy coat of mail, and the king’s sword. David took a few steps and stopped. “I cannot go with these,” he said, “for I have not proved them.” He’d never fought in armor. So he took it all off.

Instead, David picked up what he knew: his shepherd’s staff, his sling, and five smooth stones from the brook. He walked out to meet a giant in full battle gear, and told him the battle belonged to the Lord. One stone later, Goliath was on the ground.

Reflection

Saul meant well. His armor was the best in Israel. But it was built for Saul, not for David, and it would have slowed him down.
