The Answer at the Door
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Acts 12:1–17 ↗
“Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”
Acts 12:5 (KJV)The Story
King Herod had just executed the apostle James, and the crowd loved it. So he arrested Peter too, planning to put him on trial after the Passover. Herod took no chances. Peter was guarded by sixteen soldiers, chained between two of them, with more guards at the door.
But the church was praying, constantly and earnestly.
The night before his trial, Peter was sound asleep. Suddenly a light filled the cell, and an angel struck him on the side. “Get up quickly.” The chains fell off his wrists. Peter followed the angel past the first guard post, then the second, and the iron gate to the city swung open on its own. Peter thought he was dreaming until he found himself alone in the street.
He went straight to the house where the believers were praying and knocked. A servant girl named Rhoda recognized his voice and was so excited she ran back inside without opening the door. “Peter is at the gate!” The people praying for his release told her she was out of her mind. Meanwhile, Peter kept knocking.
Reflection
There’s something comforting about this story. The church prayed faithfully, but when the answer showed up, they didn’t believe it. God answered anyway. Their prayers weren’t powerful because their faith was perfect. They were powerful because God is faithful.
