I Will Not Leave You Comfortless
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: John 14:1–3, 15–18, 25–27 ↗
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
John 14:18 (KJV)The Story
It was Jesus’ last night with His disciples before the cross. They had shared the Passover meal. He had washed their feet. Judas had gone out into the night.
Jesus had just told them He was leaving, and they were troubled.
So He gave them promises. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” In My Father’s house are many mansions. I’m going to prepare a place for you. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Then He made another promise. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, who will be with you forever: the Spirit of truth. He will live with you and be in you.
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
He will teach you all things, Jesus said, and remind you of everything I have told you.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Reflection
The word translated “comfortless” can also mean “orphans.” Jesus was saying: I won’t leave you like orphans, alone in the world with no one to care for you.
