Key Verse

“And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.”

Luke 8:3 (KJV)

The Story

As Jesus traveled from town to town preaching, He didn’t carry money for food or lodging. So how did He and His disciples live?

Luke tells us, almost in passing. Along with the twelve disciples, a group of women traveled with Jesus. Many of them had been healed by Him. There was Mary Magdalene, from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons. There was Joanna, whose husband Chuza managed King Herod’s household. There was Susanna. “And many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.”

These women paid for the ministry of Jesus out of their own money.

They didn’t preach to the crowds. They weren’t among the twelve. But they made it possible for Jesus to keep going. And when the disciples ran away at the cross, these women stayed. They watched where He was buried. They went home and prepared spices. And early on Sunday morning, they were the first ones at the tomb.

Reflection

The Son of God, who fed five thousand people with five loaves, allowed Himself to be fed by the generosity of these women. God provided for Jesus the same way He often provides for us: through ordinary people who give.
