Two Small Coins
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Mark 12:41–44 ↗
“For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
Mark 12:44 (KJV)The Story
Jesus was in the temple in Jerusalem, just days before His crucifixion. He sat down across from the treasury, where people dropped their offerings into large collection boxes, and He watched.
Many rich people came by and put in large amounts. Some of them probably made sure others noticed.
Then a poor widow came. She dropped in two tiny copper coins, the smallest money there was. Together they were worth almost nothing.
Jesus called His disciples over. “Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury.”
The disciples must have been confused. More? It was two coins.
Jesus explained. “For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
The rich gave what they could spare. She gave what she needed to live on.
Reflection
This widow didn’t know Jesus was watching. She didn’t know her gift would be remembered for two thousand years. She simply gave everything she had to God and trusted Him with what would happen next.
