My Lord and My God
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: John 20:19–31 ↗
“And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”
John 20:28–29 (KJV)The Story
On the evening of the first Easter Sunday, the disciples were gathered behind locked doors, afraid. Suddenly Jesus stood among them. “Peace be unto you.” He showed them His hands and His side, and they were overjoyed.
But Thomas wasn’t there.
When the others told him, “We have seen the Lord,” Thomas refused to believe. “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
For eight days, Thomas lived with his doubt while his friends were full of joy.
Then the disciples gathered again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them again. “Peace be unto you.”
Then He turned straight to Thomas. “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.”
Thomas didn’t need to touch Him. He answered, “My Lord and my God.”
Reflection
We call him “Doubting Thomas,” but notice how Jesus treated him. He didn’t scold Thomas or leave him out. He came back for him. He offered exactly what Thomas had asked for.
