Tabitha, Arise
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Acts 9:36–42 ↗
“But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.”
Acts 9:40 (KJV)The Story
In the seaside town of Joppa lived a disciple named Tabitha, also called Dorcas. The Bible says she was “full of good works and almsdeeds.” She spent her life helping others, especially the widows in her community.
Then she became sick and died. Her friends washed her body and laid her in an upstairs room.
The believers heard that Peter was in Lydda, a nearby town, so they sent two men to him with an urgent request: “Please come without delay.”
Peter went with them right away. When he arrived, they took him upstairs. The room was full of widows, crying. They showed him the coats and garments Dorcas had made for them while she was alive.
Peter sent them all out of the room. He knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, arise.”
She opened her eyes. When she saw Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up, then called the believers and widows and presented her to them alive.
The news spread throughout Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.
Reflection
Dorcas didn’t preach sermons or lead armies. She sewed clothes for widows. And when she died, the whole community wept, holding up the coats she had made with her own hands.
