This Same Jesus
Read it yourself in the King James Bible: Acts 1:1–11 ↗
“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
Acts 1:11 (KJV)The Story
For forty days after His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples and spoke with them about the kingdom of God.
Then, on the Mount of Olives, He gave them one more instruction and one more promise. Don’t leave Jerusalem, He said. Wait for the promise of the Father. In a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
The disciples still had questions. “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”
Jesus told them it wasn’t for them to know the times the Father had set. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, He said, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Then, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.
The disciples stood there staring at the sky. Suddenly two men in white clothes stood beside them. “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?” This same Jesus who was taken up from you will come back in the same way you saw Him go.
Reflection
The disciples were left with two promises: the Spirit is coming soon, and Jesus is coming back.
